Works of the District
Works of the District Rivers
The Suwannee River Water Management District has the authority to establish and enforce guidelines for construction within its floodways and floodplains.
There are five works of the district rivers:
- Suwannee
- Santa Fe
- Alapaha
- Aucilla
- Withlacoochee
Consider reviewing our relevant agency rules, specifically 40B-4.3000, Florida Administrative Code.
Works of the District Permits
The District has permitting requirements for construction of new single-family dwellings and improvements to existing residences within the works of the district.
This means that anyone planning to build a house, deck, porch, dock, seawall, walkway, bulkhead, storage shed or any other structure within a floodway must first apply for a works of the district development permit from the District prior to construction.
No development or clearing of land will be allowed within 75 feet of a river.
Please be advised that if your project is located along, adjacent to, or within a sovereign submerged land, as defined in Florida Department of Environmental Protection's (FDEP) Chapter 18-21, Florida Administrative Code, a Sovereign Submerged Lands (SSL) authorization may be required. Most small or minor activities requiring a SSL authorization are handled and issued by the District. If you have questions about this permit, please call District staff at 386.362.1001, or contact FDEP ( http://www.dep.state.fl.us/water/wetlands/erp/ssla.htm).
