Join SRWMD in celebrating June as Great Outdoors Month

LIVE OAK, FLA., JUNE 7, 2023 – Warm weather, blue skies, and sunshine can mean only one thing – summer is here, and the Suwannee River Water Management District (District) invites you to join the celebration of Great Outdoors Month, taking place through the end of June.

As families begin embarking on summer activities, June is the perfect time to enjoy the beauty of Natural Florida. To honor Florida’s natural resources and recreational opportunities, June is annually declared as Great Outdoors Month in the state of Florida.

Great Outdoors Month is celebrated to spotlight not only the beauty of Florida, but also the health and economic benefits provided by the recreational activities at District lands, springs, rivers, and state parks.

“North Florida is home to various recreational activities that can be enjoyed throughout the summer,” said Hugh Thomas, executive director of the District. “Studies have shown that being outside in nature supports an active and healthy lifestyle, which is shown to increase life expectancy, reduce stress, and improve sleep. So we encourage everyone to get outdoors and enjoy nature’s gifts!”

From swimming in clear, natural springs and ambling rivers to hiking or horseback riding through peaceful forests, North Florida offers various opportunities to connect with nature and explore the outdoors.

Recreational opportunities afforded to residents and visitors through District-owned lands can be found at https://map.mysuwanneeriver.com/

The mission of the Suwannee River Water Management District is to protect and manage water resources using science-based solutions to support natural systems and the needs of the public. The District holds true to the belief of water for nature, water for people. Headquartered in Live Oak, Florida, the District serves 15 surrounding north-central Florida counties.
