[ARCHIVED] A LITTLE WATER CONSERVATION CAN GO A LONG WAY

Week 1 Introduction Graphic

LIVE OAK, FLA, April 5, 2021 – Small changes in daily habits can make a large, collective impact on water conservation. The Suwannee River Water Management District (District) is recognizing April as Water Conservation Month to bring awareness to the importance of conserving water and to challenge partners and residents to save water.

“A simple way for residents and visitors to help protect our springs and rivers is by reducing the amount of water they use each day,” said Hugh Thomas, executive director of the District. “Over 90 percent of the District relies on the Floridan aquifer for drinking water. It is critical for us to protect this important resource by implementing water conservation techniques.”

The District is also doing their part by implementing projects focused on reducing water use to ensure a sustainable supply of water for people and the environment. An estimated 20.8 million gallons per day (mgd) of water will be made available through water supply projects currently in progress. The District also implements water conservation awareness through educational programs and outreach materials to bring attention to the importance of reducing water use.

The District has asked cities and counties in the region to recognize April as Water Conservation Month as well. The cities and counties are encouraged to educate their residents about how to conserve water and why it is important to conserve. Throughout April, the District will be sharing tips and tricks on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube about how to easily conserve water. These strategies are easy for residents and business owners to adopt and use throughout their daily routines.

Some tips on reducing water use include:

• Taking a shower that is less than five minutes long.

• Turning off the faucet when it is not being used.

• Washing larger loads of laundry at one time.

• Using a dishwasher instead of the sink to wash dishes.
